Red Sox sign Carlos Delgado to minor league deal

The banged-up Boston Red Sox have signed cost-free agent slugger Carlos Delgado to some minor league agreement.

The 38-year-old Delgado has not played inside the majors since May possibly 2009 for your New York Mets. He has had two hip surgeries given that then.

Delgado is set to report to Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday. He performed winter ball in Puerto Rico during the offseason before hip difficulties slowed him.

Delgado has 473 profession house runs.

Boston 1st baseman Kevin Youkilis had season-ending surgery on his thumb Friday and Mike Lowell took his spot.

Delgado worked out for the Red Sox on Friday at Yankee Stadium and manager Terry Francona says he swung the bat effectively. But Francona cautioned Saturday that it's too early to project what to assume from Delgado.

Kevin Youkilis is out for the year or so, so the Red Sox signed first baseman Carlos Delgado into a minor-league contract Saturday.

Delgado, 38, hasn't performed in the majors given that May well 2009 with all the Mets. He has had two hip surgeries considering that.

Delgado, who has 473 career home runs, will go to Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) Sunday. He played winter ball throughout the offseason in Puerto Rico.

Youkilis is out to the season which has a thumb injury.
